Why Standing for What’s Right Feels So Hard Sometimes

Have you ever asked God, “Why does it feel so hard to do what’s right?” I’ve asked that, too. During a devotion time, I came across this verse in Matthew 5:6 that speaks to the very heart of the Christian walk: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” — Matthew 5:6. This passage speaks directly to our struggles when we hunger for righteousness in a world that often doesn’t value it.

At first, it sounds like a beautiful promise—and it is. But if you think about it, it’s also a reminder of reality: if you hunger for righteousness, it means you’re surrounded by things that aren’t right. And sometimes, that’s just plain hard.

But here’s the good news: God sees you. He knows the hunger. And He promises to fill it.

When You Want to Walk Away

A few months ago, I volunteered for an organization. At first, I was excited. But it didn’t take long for me to notice the gossip, the conflict, the backbiting. There were moments when I thought, “I don’t belong here. Maybe I should just resign.”

But during prayer, God clearly reminded me: “Stay, I placed you there.” And that changed everything.

Maybe pursuing righteousness doesn’t mean leaving uncomfortable places. Maybe it means staying and standing.

What True Righteousness Looks Like

We sometimes think that standing for what’s right means calling people out or being loud. But true righteousness is more than that. It looks like:

  • Holding onto truth when others are okay with compromise
  • Choosing kindness even when people talk behind your back
  • Listening more than reacting
  • Serving others, even when no one notices
  • Staying consistent in your values, even when it’s unpopular

Being righteous doesn’t mean being perfect or aggressive—it means being grounded in God, even when it’s hard.

When It Feels Lonely or Frustrating

There will be days when doing the right thing feels tiring or pointless. I know I’ve felt that. But God’s promise stands: “They shall be satisfied.” You won’t always feel celebrated. You might even be misunderstood. But God sees every quiet act of faithfulness, every moment you choose light over darkness.

“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” — Psalm 23:2-3

When the world is loud, God brings peace. When people are unfair, God defends you. When you feel empty, God fills you.

How to Keep Standing for What’s Right

Here are simple things to keep in mind when you feel the pressure:

  • Pause and pray before you react Sometimes silence and prayer are more powerful than trying to explain yourself.
  • Let your presence bring peace Even if you don’t say much, let others feel Jesus through your calm spirit.
  • Remember who placed you there You’re not in that space by accident. God has a purpose for you right where you are.
  • Let God handle the outcome You’re not here to impress people—you’re here to obey God. He sees your effort, even when others don’t.

A Prayer for You

Lord, I pray for the person reading this right now. You see their hunger for what’s right. You know how tiring it can be when the world feels unfair. Please remind them that You are near. Give them strength to keep showing up, even when it feels hard. Use their quiet obedience to bring light to dark places. When they feel alone, fill them with Your peace. When they feel discouraged, remind them that You are their reward. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Final Thought

“Those who hunger for righteousness will never go unfulfilled.” Even when you feel unseen—God sees you. Even when others ignore you—heaven applauds you. And even when you feel empty from the struggle to do what’s right—God promises to fill your hunger for righteousness.
